Plants -

  1. Each student grows one plant, waters and measures it every day.  Let students choose from different plants to grow (corn, green beans etc.).  Compile class data and do statistical study with mean/standard deviation of height and so on.
  2. This project can be controlled for several variables: Water, sunlight, room to grow, fertilizer.  For example, control how much water a group gives their plants and give several groups different amounts.  Then find the optimum amount of water each plant needed.
  3. How was the growth of the plant affected by the amount of water it received?  Did this change over time?  Compare with other plants that received more or less water.  Was plant growth steady, or did it grow in spurts?  Based on comparisons with plants that received different amounts of water, how did the amount of water affect how fast or slow the plant grew throughout the observation period?  What is the optimum amount of water needed to ensure the fastest plant growth?
  4. Interdisciplinary -
    • History - Domesticated crops, grow plants from some historical time period and the effect they had on the culture or people
    • Biology - scientific process, hypothesis, how to do research, photosynthesis, water, sunlight, room to grow
    • Math/Statistics - Coordinate plane, best-fit-line, solving/graphing/deriving linear equations, slope, x/y-intercepts, variables
    • English - write a report, how to write about research
